The project evaluation office (Oficina Evaluadora de Proyectos, OEP) at Miguel Hernandez University in Spain contacted Responsible Research in 2017 having become aware of a “Bioscientist’s Guide to Research Integrity” workshop taking place in the UK.

The Challenge: The OEP provide ethics education for researchers at the university but wanted a research integrity workshop to complement and enhance the existing training provision. The content needed to be tailored not only to the university, but also to the country (Spain) with relevant pan-European resources signposted when equivalent National ones could not be identified.

The Solution: The client had a specific target audience in mind so by discussing and agreeing training objectives for the workshop we were quickly able to identify the most appropriate format and content to be covered. Once a date to deliver the training was set the client was able to begin advertising the workshop and registering participants, whilst we focused on creating the tailored training content.

How We Added Value: At Responsible Research we are pride ourselves on the personal service that each of our clients receive. As soon as training content is under development all our clients are invited to monitor progress and provide input should they wish to using the secure online access we provide. The process of tailoring training content also means that we often provide additional services. This may be an informal review of local research policy, governance or ethical framework documents, or an enhanced awareness of freely available good practice research tools and resources.

The Result: From the initial enquiry it took just seven months to create and deliver a completely bespoke Responsible Animal Research workshop at Miguel Hernandez University. The workshop was delivered at the university in English, with key links and references provided in Spanish (when possible). The event was well attended by researchers, research facility staff and members of the local research ethics committee and received very positive feedback.

I am a veterinary surgeon specialized in science and health of laboratory animals since 2003. Nowadays I work on two main fields: Research Compliance and Laboratory Animals and Ethics Education. It has been a real pleasure working with Nikki Osborne from Responsible Research. Nikki was able to understand our concrete needs about research integrity focused on laboratory animals, taking in account Spanish legislation and the situation of this matter in our country. I have recommended Responsible Research to other colleges since I am sure they will not be disappointed with the great tailored service offered.
